Dear Legionnaires \u89aa\u611b\u7684\u6703\u53cb\uff1a<\/h4>\n

We sincerely hope\u00a0that\u00a0you\u00a0are enjoying your\u00a0summer\u00a0and that you and your families are safe and healthy.\u00a0After experiencing tremendous momentum toward putting COVID-19 behind us, we are now unfortunately faced with a resurgence caused by the Delta variant. The past few months have been unlike any others we have ever experienced, not only is the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to cause havoc but also we have seen horrible anti-Asian discrimination on the rise. Together we must do our part to encourage everyone to get vaccinated and also be strong to combat the alarming rise in anti-Asian discrimination.<\/h4>\n

The Post resumed normal operations as of July 1st<\/sup>, 2021 and has been busy with various activities. To ensure the safety of our members, we are mandating anyone who is not vaccinated to continue to observe CDC guidelines and Government instructions by wearing a mask and practicing social distancing when inside the Post. We hosted two very successful classes at the\u00a0Post\u2019s 2nd floor Chairman Peter Woo Auditorium\u00a0and would like to thank Executive Committeeman Lester Chang for arranging sessions on boating safety in July and August. The one day, 8-hour, boating course would normally cost over $100 but was offered to the Legion family for free. Certified instructor Navy Captain\u00a0Don McKnight of the NY Naval Militia taught the courses.<\/h4>\n

Over the last two years, many repeated attempts were made to reach all WWII Post members to have them register for the\u00a0Chinese American World War II Veterans Congressional Gold Medal with the Chinese American Citizen Alliance (CACA) to receive\u00a0their\u00a0long deserved\u00a0medal\u00a0for their bravery and sacrifice during WWII.\u00a0 We were able to track down another living WWII Post member who didn\u2019t register before the extended dead line of May 31, 2021. The Post took on the great effort to reward our oldest living member at 107 with 74 years of continuous membership, George Tai, \u201cMr. George\u201d as he was often referred to out of respect while he was able to visit our Post in the past. Special thanks to 1st<\/sup>\u00a0District President Karen Chan, a childhood friend of George\u2019s son Jack, for locating George, after we lost contact for over three years since he moved to the Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Facility in Connecticut. Past Commander Tony Chuy, Past Commander Kenneth Wong, Adjutant Gabe Mui, Vice Commander Tommy Ong, along with Karen Chan and her brother Jeffery, a SAL member, made the two hour trip on August 20, 2021 to present the\u00a0Chinese American World War II Veterans Congressional Gold Medal\u00a0to George on behalf of the Kimlau Post. The nursing staff decorated the outdoor garden patriotically with American Flags to mark the occasion and invited local media to cover the very emotional presentation ceremony. In a thank you note from George\u2019s family to the Post showing their appreciation for our effort; \u201cAs you saw, Dad was beaming with smiles and with snappy salutes to his long-time American Legion commanders and friends,\u00a0Kay and I have not seen him so engaged in such a long time.\u201d<\/h4>\n

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the American Legion Department Headquarters, with the approval of the Department Executive Committee has instituted a new policy for 102nd\u00a0<\/sup>Department Convention in\u00a0Albany,\u00a0New York.\u00a0The convention was limited to 100 attendees consisting of Department Executive Committee members, Past Department Commanders and Headquarters personnel. Department Vice Commander Gabe Mui, a member of the Department Executive Committee attended the meeting held on July 28th to 31st<\/sup>.\u00a0Frank LaMarsh, of Gold Star Post 1365, Richmond County, and 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0District\u00a0was elected Department Commander of the Legion for 2021-2022.\u00a0Commander Frank LaMarsh is a Vietnam veteran and served in the U. S. Navy. Commander Frank LaMarsh designated Operation Comfort Warrior as his special project for 2021-2022.<\/h4>\n

Paul E. Dillard, a Vietnam War U. S. Navy veteran,\u00a0of\u00a0Post 265 in Lake Kiowa, Texas was elected National Commander of 2021-2022 at the 102nd<\/sup> National Convention held at Phoenix, Arizona. Commander Dillard\u00a0shared his theme for this year; \u201cNo Veteran Left Behind.\u201d He stated, \u201cThere are many consequences for a veteran who is left behind, isolation, denied benefits, lost opportunity, lack of decent housing or employment are just a few. But the most tragic outcome for a veteran left behind is suicide. We must not let them down.\u201d He shared some statistics on veteran suicide and stated that veterans are at a 50 percent higher risk of suicide than their non-serving peers. He encouraged that we must regularly continue our Buddy Checks and offered hope that we can prevent any such tragedies.<\/h4>\n

Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough pledged to work to get the nation\u2019s veterans and VA through the COVID-19 pandemic. He referring to the smaller than usual attendance of the American Legion 102nd<\/sup>\u00a0National Convention at Phoenix, Arizona and said \u201cIt is impossible not to notice the empty seats of those who are no longer with us.\u201d He stressed the most important thing to combat the COVID-19 pandemic is to get vaccinated. He said despite the challenge the VA has faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, the expansion of telehealth services allows VA to reach more veterans, including those living in the rural communities. He also stated \u201cThere is no more important outcome that preventing veteran suicide.\u201d Thus the VA is building a network that will allow caregivers to work with veterans with mental health issues.<\/h4>\n

On the 20th<\/sup>\u00a0Anniversary of the unforgettable tragic events of September 11, 2001, our Post continues to host a candlelight remembrance at Kimlau Square to pay tribute to the thousands who have perished and honor the heroes who bravely risked their lives to save others. This year we have coordinated with Chinatown Business District (BID), the Rotary Club of Chinatown and other community organizations to add a memorial walk to the Ground Zero Reflecting Pool at the conclusion of the candlelight remembrance. The remembrance was conducted by Commander Randall Eng and attended by Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Councilmember Peter Koo, Candidate for councilmember of 1st<\/sup>\u00a0District Christopher Marte, Chief of Staff of Councilmember Margaret Chin\u2019s Office Gigi Li, Commissioner of New York City Department Veterans Services James Hendon (proud to say our newest member), CCBA President Justin Yu, Ling Sing Association Kenny Leung, Chinatown BID Chair Frank Yee and Executive Director Wellington Chen, American Legion 1st<\/sup>\u00a0District Commander Rod Rodrick, New York County Commander Jack Stein and many others.<\/h4>\n

\u5e0c\u671b\u672c\u6703\u5404\u6703\u54e1\u53ca\u5bb6\u4eba\u6691\u5047\u5feb\u6a02\u53ca\u5e73\u5b89\u5065\u5eb7\u3002\u6211\u5011\u6b63\u7d93\u6b77\u4e86\u4e00\u6bb5\u6f2b\u9577\u7684\u6642\u9593\u9010\u615a\u5728\u65b0\u51a0\u75ab\u60c5\u4e0b\u6b65\u5411\u56de\u8986\u6b63\u5e38\u60c5\u6cc1\u6642\uff0c\u537b\u4e0d\u5e78\u5730\u73fe\u6b63\u9762\u81e8\u8b8a\u7a2e\u75c5\u6bd2\u6301\u7e8c\u56b4\u91cd\u5f71\u97ff\u6211\u5011\u65e5\u5e38\u751f\u6d3b\u3002\u5728\u904e\u53bb\u5e7e\u500b\u6708\u4e2d\u6211\u5011\u4e0d\u55ae\u6b62\u53d7\u5230\u8b8a\u7a2e\u75c5\u6bd2\u7684\u56f0\u64fe\uff0c\u4e26\u540c\u6642\u770b\u5230\u4ec7\u4e9e\u66b4\u529b\u6848\u4ef6\u6b63\u5728\u4e0a\u5347\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u5fc5\u9808\u5171\u540c\u9762\u5c0d\u53ca\u52aa\u529b\uff0c\u9f13\u52f5\u6bcf\u500b\u4eba\u90fd\u63a5\u7a2e\u75ab\u82d7\uff0c\u540c\u6642\u4e5f\u8981\u5728\u9019\u6bb5\u8271\u96e3\u6642\u523b\u5805\u5f37\u5730\u5c0d\u6297\u4ecd\u5728\u589e\u52a0\u7684\u4ec7\u4e9e\u88d4\u6b67\u8996\u3002<\/h4>\n

\u672c\u6703\u65bc\u4eca\u5e74\u4e03\u6708\u4e00\u65e5\u8d77\u6062\u5fa9\u6b63\u5e38\u904b\u4f5c\uff0c\u4e26\u4e00\u76f4\u5fd9\u65bc\u5404\u9805\u6d3b\u52d5\u3002\u70ba\u78ba\u4fdd\u672c\u6703\u6703\u54e1\u7684\u5b89\u5168\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u8981\u6c42\u672a\u63a5\u7a2e\u75ab\u82d7\u7684\u6703\u54e1\u7e7c\u7e8c\u9075\u5b88\u7f8e\u570b\u75ab\u60c5\u7ba1\u5236\u8655\u53ca\u7d10\u7d04\u5e02\u653f\u5e9c\u7684\u6307\u793a\uff0c\u6234\u53e3\u7f69\u4e26\u5728\u672c\u6703\u6240\u5167\u4fdd\u6301\u793e\u4ea4\u8ddd\u96e2\u3002\u4eca\u5e74\u4e03\u6708\u53ca\u516b\u6708\u5728\u672c\u6703\u4e8c\u6a13\u4f0d\u89ba\u826f\u8463\u4e8b\u9577\u79ae\u5802\u8209\u8fa6\u4e86\u5169\u500b\u975e\u5e38\u6210\u529f\u7684\u5b89\u5168\u99d5\u8239\u8ab2\u7a0b\uff0c\u9019\u6bcf\u500b\u7d04\u516b\u5c0f\u6642\u7684\u8ab2\u7a0b\u5728\u4e00\u65e5\u5167\u5b8c\u6210\uff0c\u975e\u5e38\u611f\u8b1d\u57f7\u884c\u59d4\u54e1\u912d\u6c38\u4f73\u7279\u5225\u5b89\u6392\u53ca\u9080\u8acb\u7d10\u7d04\u6d77\u8ecd\u6c11\u5175\u4e0a\u6821\u9ea5\u514b\u5948\u8b1b\u6388\uff0c\u9019\u500b\u5e73\u6642\u6bcf\u4eba\u9700\u4ed8\u4e00\u767e\u591a\u5143\u7684\u8ab2\u7a0b\u514d\u8cbb\u8b93\u672c\u6703\u6703\u54e1\u53c3\u52a0\u3002<\/h4>\n
