Legion Year 24 – 25 Newsletter No. 4
April, 2025
Dear Legionnaires
We sincerely apologize to our members who visited our Post during the nearly two-month elevator outage. We understand that the inconvenience, especially for those who had difficulty navigating the stairs, may have caused some members to stop visiting altogether. The planned outage was necessary to modernize our aging infrastructure and ensure a safer, more reliable experience for everyone. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. Now that the improvements are complete, we invite you to return and experience the difference firsthand – we look forward to welcoming you back!
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our members and their families for joining us at the Lunar New Year’s Eve celebration at House of Joy Restaurant. It was truly a joyous occasion to come together and welcome the Year of the Snake with good company, festive spirit, and shared traditions. With nearly 400 Legion family members in attendance, the evening was filled with warmth, laughter, and camaraderie. Despite the challenges posed by New York City’s introduction of congestion pricing – an issue strongly opposed by Lower Manhattan residents – our celebration remained a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with our Legion family and embrace the New Year with optimism. We wish everyone a prosperous and healthy Year of the Snake and look forward to more memorable gatherings ahead!
During the Lunar New Year celebrations, the American Legion Lt. Kimlau Post 1291 was deeply honored to receive a citation from Mayor Eric Adams in recognition of its contributions to the community. Additionally, the Post was presented with a proclamation from New York State Assembly Member Grace Lee, the chief sponsor of the legislative initiative to designate Lunar New Year as an official holiday for all New York schools. Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine also co-hosted and many elected officials participated in the festivities, reaffirming the city’s commitment to honoring and preserving cultural traditions.
This recognition highlights the Kimlau Post’s unwavering dedication to both the nation and the local community. For decades, the Post has stood as a pillar of service, support, and advocacy. The Kimlau Post extends its heartfelt gratitude for this acknowledgment, which underscores the deep cultural and historical significance of Lunar New Year celebrations in New York City.
The entire Kimlau Legion family is proud of Sons of the American Legion member Bradley Chen for his outstanding achievement in this year’s oratorical contest. Bradley secured first place in the New York Zone One competition, earning the opportunity to compete in the New York Department contest, where he achieved an impressive second-place finish and was awarded a $4,000 scholarship.
The oratorical contest is one of the premier programs within the American Legion’s children and youth initiatives. Contestants are required to deliver an 8 to 10-minute oration on a topic related to the U.S. Constitution, showcasing their knowledge, poise, and public speaking skills. Our post has been a strong supporter of this program over the years, and we encourage the high school-aged children of our members to participate. For more information, please contact us.
For over twenty years, we have been deeply concerned about the deteriorating condition of the Lt. Kimlau Memorial. Despite numerous meetings and repeated requests to the New York City Parks and Recreation Department for necessary repairs, our efforts had been unsuccessful. Since the memorial stands on city-owned land, our Post was prohibited from undertaking the repairs ourselves, even though we were willing to fully fund the restoration.
However, two months ago, we were pleased to receive long-awaited good news—the NYC Parks and Recreation Department has finally agreed to restoration of the memorial, with work scheduled to begin this summer. This decision marks a significant step toward preserving this important landmark that honors the legacy of Lt. Benjamin Ralph Kimlau and the sacrifices of Chinese-American veterans.
Although the pending Kimlau Square redesign project may influence the memorial’s final location, we remain optimistic that the renovation will ensure the monument continues to stand as a symbol of remembrance and respect for generations to come. We appreciate the city’s commitment to this effort and look forward to seeing the restoration come to fruition.
Following the overwhelming positive feedback from our last 7-day cruise to Bermuda, as well as numerous requests for another trip, the Post-Summer Outing Committee has decided to organize another cruise this summer! We are excited to announce that we will be sailing on the Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas for a 7-day cruise to the Bahamas in September. The itinerary includes departures from Cape Liberty, New Jersey, with stops in Florida, CocoCay (Royal Caribbean’s private island), and Nassau, Bahamas. To make things easier, transportation to and from Cape Liberty will be arranged. As of our last cruise, we are once again working with Travel Agent Carrie Chen from Five Star Travel, located at 98 Mott Street, New York, NY 10013. You can reach her at 212-625-8107 to book your cruise. When making your reservation, please mention that you are from our Post. Keep in mind that prices may increase if you delay your booking, so we encourage you to secure your spot as soon as possible. Additionally, you must inform the Post of your booking details to be eligible for a subsidy. The exact subsidy amount will be shared with you once all bookings are finalized. We hope you’ll join us for another amazing trip!
With the celebration of our 80th Anniversary just over a month away, we are in high gear, preparing an event that will be truly memorable for everyone. Our commemorative journal, which we publish every five years, is in its final stages before being sent to the printer for publication. As we finalize the details, we welcome any assistance you can offer to help make this milestone celebration a great success. Your support and involvement will ensure that this special occasion is both meaningful and unforgettable for all who attend.
We were delighted to hand out nearly 20 scholarship awards in December to recognize deserving students’ hard work in achieving academic success. Please note that in order to make it easier for students to arrange for transcripts to be sent to us while they are still in school the post has revised the scholarship application period. The scholarship application submission period will now be from January 1st to August 31st.
Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas

The Legion Year 2025-2026 Post Installation ceremony and banquet will be held on Saturday, June 7, 2025. Installation of officers is scheduled for 4 pm at the Post Chairman Peter Woo Auditorium; followed immediately by the annual banquet at House of Joy Restaurant at 6 pm.
There have been past incidents and as recent as Lunar New Year Eve dinner that caused disruption when purchasing dinner tickets. To minimize any future disruption and streamline the process, all members must proof their current year membership by showing their membership card when purchasing the dinner tickets. No exceptions will be granted.
As you all aware that our installation banquet is usually attended by close to one thousand invited guests and member families. Due to no restaurant in Chinatown having large capacity for more than 400 people, the installation banquet for this year will be held on two separate days. The banquet on Saturday, June 7th will be for invited guests and the banquet on Sunday, June 8th will be for Legion, Auxiliary, SAL members, family and friends.
Anyone who wishes to attend the banquet must register with the Post staff from Monday May 5, 2025 to Sunday, May 18, 2025 (2 – 4 pm daily, except Tuesday). First come first served, with no exceptions. Eligibility and cost for the banquet are as follow –
-
Members with 2025 membership card and who had made a donation of $30.00 or more – one complimentary
-
Companion ticket $30.00 each – limited to one per eligible member, no exceptions.
-
Members of the Lt. Kimlau American Auxiliary Unit or the Lt. Kimlau Sons of American Legion Squadron are invited to join this banquet if they are not otherwise qualified. Cost is $30.00 per ticket and maximum 2 tickets each. Please bring your 20205 Auxiliary or SAL membership card.
-
Additional tickets can be purchased beginning May 12, 2025 for $40.00. Maximum of 8 additional tickets per member.
