Dear Legionnaires 親愛的會友:
Memorial Day serves as a time to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives to protect our nation’s security and liberty. It is both a meaningful and somber occasion, reminding both veterans and civilians of the profound cost of our freedom. As a nation, we are deeply indebted to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. In the morning, we attended the solemn ceremony at the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in Riverside Park, Upper Manhattan. This annual event honors the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation’s freedom, and we were proud to stand among those paying tribute. In the afternoon, our Post hosted our annual Memorial Day Parade through Mott Street, culminating in a commemorative ceremony at Kimlau Square. The event was attended by elected officials, community leaders from Chinatown, and members of the public who came to pay their respects. Our Post Color Guard led the parade, followed by members of the American Legion, the Auxiliary, and the Sons of the American Legion. It was a powerful display of unity and remembrance as we came together to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country.
The Lt. B.R. Kimlau Post proudly celebrated its 80th anniversary and officially commenced the 2025–2026 year with a momentous officer installation ceremony on June 7, 2025. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the incoming officers and look forward to a promising year under their leadership. The ceremony, held in the Post’s Chairman Peter Woo Auditorium, marked a smooth and successful transition of leadership. We were honored by the strong show of support from the community and especially delighted to welcome 15 members of the San Francisco Cathay Post 384 led by Commander George Tsang, who traveled across the country to join in our milestone celebration. Their presence, along with the active participation of community members and Post members, made the event truly special.
Due to space limitations in local Chinatown restaurants, the installation banquet was thoughtfully organized over two evenings to ensure all attendees could be accommodated comfortably. One of the banquets, held at the House of Joy Restaurant, was graced by distinguished guests including Deputy Director General Lishan Chang of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association President Antonio Chuy, as well as numerous community leaders and fellow Legionnaires from the Bronx and New York County. We sincerely thank all VIPs, members, and guests for joining us and supporting our 80th anniversary celebration. We are also proud to welcome back Commander Kenneth Wong, who previously led the Post from 2016 to 2018. A seasoned and dedicated leader, Commander Wong has pledged to draw upon his past experience to further improve Post operations and continue serving our veterans and community with commitment and care. We are excited for what lies ahead under his capable leadership.
Past Commander Frank Gee was honored and surprised to be inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame. The award was presented by Senator Brian Kavanagh during a celebratory dinner recognizing his outstanding service and contributions. Frank is the second inductee from Senator Kavanagh’s district. Past Commander Mimi Wang received the same honor in 2022, making this a proud moment of continued recognition for the district’s exceptional veterans. In contrast to the formal 80th anniversary celebration, the installation banquet on the next day was a fun-filled event enjoyed exclusively by Legion family members. The evening featured karaoke, dancing, and plenty of laughter, creating a party atmosphere unlike any we’ve experienced at previous banquets, or even at any community banquet. It was truly a night to remember.
Continuing our proud tradition of community service and youth development, our Post has once again partnered with the New York City Old Guards to sponsor 35 students from Fort Hamilton High School for the 2025 Leadership Summer Camp at the prestigious New York Military Academy. These students, all members of the school’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program, come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and were selected for their leadership potential and commitment to service.
Vice Commander Kenneth Wong and Wilem Wong presented donation checks on behalf of our Post to retired Major Sang Lee, U.S. Army, who oversees the Fort Hamilton High School JROTC program. The funds will help cover the costs of transportation, lodging, meals, and training materials for the cadets attending the summer camp. The camp, held annually, provides an intensive leadership experience that includes physical fitness training, academic enrichment, team-building exercises, and military-style drills. It aims to instill discipline, responsibility, and confidence in young cadets, many of whom aspire to pursue military or public service careers. In addition to our ongoing support for Fort Hamilton HS, we are proud to announce that our Post will also be extending sponsorship to the JROTC unit at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School this year. This marks the beginning of a broader initiative to reach and empower more young leaders throughout New York City. Our Post remains committed to nurturing the next generation through educational and character-building opportunities. We are honored to play a role in shaping future leaders who will serve their communities and country with integrity and pride.
