Dear Legionnaires

We kicked off the New Year by resuming our members’ social gatherings, which were paused in November and December due to our Thanksgiving and Christmas luncheon events. It was great to reconnect and enjoy meaningful conversations. Members shared highlights and hard lessons from 2025, discussed personal goals for 2026, and talked openly about what kind of support from the Post would be truly helpful moving forward. The discussion was thoughtful, honest, and a great reminder of the strength of our members.

During the Social Gathering, we were grateful to have fellow member David Ho share his time and experience by offering mentoring and guidance on transitioning to civilian life, along with information on other valuable services available to Veterans and their families. David highlighted the work of American Corporate Partners (ACP), a national nonprofit dedicated to helping Veterans and Active-Duty Spouses successfully move into meaningful civilian careers. Through one-on-one mentoring, professional networking, and online career resources, ACP connects participants with experienced mentors from more than 1,500 leading companies, universities, and hospitals. They have helped thousands of Veterans and military families build long-term, fulfilling career paths and overcome the challenges of underemployment. Best of all, all ACP programs are completely free to Veterans. We strongly encourage any member seeking career guidance, professional support, or a fresh direction after military service to take advantage of ACP’s mentoring programs and explore the opportunities available by visiting their website. https://www.acp-usa.org/

Post leadership recently attended the American Legion New York Department Mid-Winter Conference in Albany. The conference provided valuable opportunities to learn about a wide range of subjects essential to effective Post operations, while broadening our understanding of Legion programs, procedures, and protocol. It also allowed us to reconnect with fellow Legionnaires from across New York State, strengthening camaraderie and shared purpose. In addition, attendees had the opportunity to meet the leading candidate for the upcoming Department Commander. Participation in conferences like this is vital to staying informed and engaged, and we strongly encourage members to take part in future conferences whenever possible.

Later in the month, following guidance from government officials and national forecasts warning of an impending winter storm and treacherous travel conditions, we made the early decision on Thursday to postpone the scheduled Sunday Executive Meeting to the following Sunday. This decision was made with the safety of our members as our top priority and to minimize unnecessary travel risks. The storm ultimately brought more than ten inches of snow and blizzard condition to most of our area. While postponing a scheduled meeting is unprecedented, the decision proved to be the right one and worked out well for everyone.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of two of our Past Commanders within the last three months; Past Commander Mark Eng in October and Past Commander Antonio Chuy in January. Both were proud veterans of the Vietnam era who served our nation with honor and distinction, and later devoted themselves to the Lt. B. R. Kimlau Post 1291 and the Chinatown community with unwavering dedication. Past Commander Mark Eng, a proud descendant of transcontinental railroad workers and born in Taishan, China, served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he attaining the rank of Specialist 4 and acting sergeant in charge of the supply room. After a distinguished career with the U.S. Postal Service, he continued his lifelong commitment to service as a two-term Commander of our Post, a Life Member, and President of the Eng Family Association. He was a loyal friend, and a daily presence at the Post whose warmth and camaraderie will never be forgotten. Past Commander Antonio Chuy, born in Hong Kong and raised in the United States, served three years of active duty with the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet during the Vietnam War and continued for 21 years in the Naval Reserve. He also dedicated 28 years to the New York City Department of Correction, becoming its first Chinese self-defense instructor and serving as President of the DOC Asian Jade Society. A master of Praying Mantis martial arts and Lion Dance, Tony strengthened cultural pride and unity through decades of teaching and community engagement. He served three-term as Commander of our Post, President of the Nam Sun Association, and still serving as the President of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association when he passed. He led with courage and conviction; especially during the difficult days of the COVID pandemic when he helped organize self-defense programs to support and protect our community. Their lives were defined by service; to country, to comrades, and to community, and they will be profoundly missed by all of us at the Kimlau Post.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our members and their families for joining us at the Lunar New Year’s Eve celebration at House of Joy Restaurant. It was truly a joyous occasion to come together and welcome the New Year with good company, festive spirit, and cherished traditions. With nearly 400 Legion family members in attendance, the event filled the restaurant to full capacity, including additional seating in the basement. The evening was filled with warmth, laughter, and camaraderie, as members enjoyed karaoke, music, and even dancing together. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with our Legion family and celebrate the New Year with optimism and unity. We wish everyone a prosperous and healthy Year of the Horse. Notably, 2026 is a rare “Fire Horse” year, which occurs only once every 60 years and symbolizes passion, transformation, bold energy, and powerful forward movement. We look forward to many more memorable gatherings ahead!

We were delighted to hand out nearly 20 scholarship awards in December to recognize deserving students’ hard work in achieving academic success. Please note that in order to make it easier for students to arrange for transcripts to be sent to us while they are still in school the post has revised the scholarship application period.  The scholarship application submission period will now be from January 1st to August 31st.
